Betting Budget Calculator

This tool doesn't help you win more. It helps you set a hard cap on what you spend, based on money you can genuinely afford to lose. Betting should come out of disposable income only, never rent, bills, or savings.

This is a budgeting tool, not financial advice, and it can't tell you what's safe for your personal situation. If betting is affecting your finances, relationships, or wellbeing, stop and contact the National Responsible Gambling Programme on 0800 006 008, free, confidential, 24/7.

Suggested monthly limit: —

Treat this as money that's already spent the moment you deposit it. The goal is entertainment within a fixed cost, not a way to make money.

How to Actually Use This Number

  1. Set this amount as a deposit limit directly in your bookmaker's app. Every licensed SA operator offers this under account or responsible-gambling settings.
  2. Split it weekly rather than depositing it all at once, so a bad week doesn't tempt you to dip into next month's amount.
  3. If you hit the limit, stop for the month. The limit only works if it's actually a limit.
  4. Re-run this calculator whenever your income or expenses change. Don't just leave an old number in place indefinitely.

Why a Small Percentage

The suggested range here (1–5% of disposable income) is a common conservative guideline used in responsible-gambling resources. It's deliberately low because betting outcomes are unpredictable by design, and the point of a budget is to make sure a losing month is annoying, not damaging. There's no "correct" percentage for everyone; if you're not sure, start lower rather than higher.

Warning Signs Worth Taking Seriously

If any of these sound familiar, the National Responsible Gambling Programme (0800 006 008) offers free, confidential counselling and can talk you through self-exclusion options with SA operators.

FAQ

Is this the “correct” amount I should bet?

No. There's no universally correct number. This gives a conservative starting point based on common responsible-gambling guidance; your own circumstances, and how comfortable you are with the risk of losing this amount entirely, should always come first.

Can I set this as an actual limit on betting apps?

Yes. Every licensed South African bookmaker is required to offer deposit limits, time-outs, and self-exclusion tools, usually under account settings or a "responsible gambling" section.

What if I go over my limit?

Treat it as a signal to stop for the period, not a target to hit next time. Repeatedly going over a limit you set for yourself is one of the warning signs worth discussing with the NRGP.
