This is the bookmaker's implied chance of the outcome happening, not a prediction. It includes the bookmaker's margin, so it's always a little higher than the "true" probability.
How the Conversions Work
| Format | Common where | Formula to decimal |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal (European) | Most SA bookmakers, including Hollywoodbets and Betway | Used directly — stake × decimal odds = total payout |
| Fractional (UK) | Some racing and older UK-style markets | decimal = (numerator ÷ denominator) + 1 |
| American (Moneyline) | US sportsbooks, sometimes shown on international platforms | positive: decimal = (odds ÷ 100) + 1 · negative: decimal = (100 ÷ |odds|) + 1 |
South African bookmakers almost always quote decimal odds, so if you're used to reading “3/2” or “+150” from overseas content, this tool is the fastest way to see what that actually means in the format you'll see on your app.
What “Implied Probability” Actually Means
Every price a bookmaker offers bakes in their margin (sometimes called the “overround” or “vig”). Implied probability is simply 1 ÷ decimal odds, expressed as a percentage. It tells you what chance the bookmaker's price implies, not what the real-world chance is. Comparing implied probability across two or three bookmakers on the same market is a quick way to spot which one is offering better value on a specific bet.
FAQ
What odds format do South African bookmakers use?
Decimal odds, almost universally. Hollywoodbets, Betway, YesPlay, Supabets and Playa Bets all display decimal odds by default.
Do higher decimal odds always mean better value?
Not necessarily. Higher odds mean a lower implied probability of that outcome, which usually means the bookmaker (and the market generally) rates it less likely. "Value" comes from comparing a price against your own honest assessment of the real chance, not from the size of the number alone.
Why do odds change before an event starts?
Odds move with betting volume, team news, and other market information. This is normal and isn't something an app or predictor can reliably anticipate in advance.
